If you buy a theme on Shopify and configure it through the theme settings, updates work fine through Shopify's normal update system. Upload the new version, your settings carry over. That part is the same with Label One as it is with any theme.
Where Label One differs is what happens when the theme settings are not enough. When you need custom code, or when you want a feature that does not exist yet, the normal Shopify path leaves you with a choice. Either live without it, or hire a developer and accept that future updates will overwrite their work.
With Label One, you use the updater tool on our site. It compares your live theme against the latest release and merges your customizations so nothing gets lost. And if the feature you need does not exist, you can talk to us directly. It might get added to the main build, which means everyone gets it and you have zero custom code to maintain.
Two ways we solve this
The first is the updater tool. The companion app compares your live theme against the latest Label One release file by file. It figures out what has changed, what you customized, and what can be carried forward. Then it produces a merged version with your customizations preserved. It is not perfect, but it handles the vast majority of updates automatically.
The second way is more interesting. A lot of the features people ask for end up in the main theme anyway. If you request something and we build it into a Label One release, that is one less piece of custom code you have to maintain. Next time you update, it is already there.
Why this matters for agencies
If you are managing multiple client stores on Label One, the math changes completely. When a new version drops, you run the updater, review any flags, and ship. What used to be hours of work per store becomes minutes.
And when your clients request features, you do not have to choose between building custom code that breaks on the next update or telling them no. You send the request to us. If it makes sense for the theme, it gets added and everyone gets it for free.
How this is different
Most theme companies ship updates and leave you to deal with the migration yourself. Some provide documentation on what changed. But none of them are in the position where the feature their customer needs today might get added to the main build next month, because they do not use the theme themselves.
We use Label One for client work every day. When a client needs something, we either build it into the theme or we build it custom. Either way, it gets done. And the updater makes sure nobody gets left behind on an old version.
